Renting a car in Malawi: what to know before you book

The requirements are short, and they are the same on every vehicle in the fleet. You must be at least 21. You must hold a driving licence, and you must have held it for at least a year — a licence issued last month will not do, whatever it permits you to drive at home.

A Malawian licence, a foreign licence and an International Driving Permit are all accepted, so most visitors need nothing they do not already carry. If you are travelling on a foreign licence it is still worth bringing an IDP where your country issues them, because it removes any argument about translation.

There is no security deposit, which is unusual enough to state plainly. Rather than holding a large sum against the vehicle, the full hire amount is payable before you collect it and every client is vetted first. The vetting is the reason the deposit is not there; it is not a formality.

All of that applies to self-drive car hire, which is where the requirements bite. If you take a vehicle with a company driver instead, they are the licence holder and the questions above stop being yours.

Malawi has two kinds of car hire customer and R&H price for both. International visitors are quoted in US dollars. Malawian residents and local clients are billed in kwacha. That is a commercial rule rather than a preference, so the two are set independently — the kwacha rate is not the dollar rate converted at whatever the interbank did that morning.

The dollar day rates are below. They are per vehicle, per day, and they are the self-drive rate: a driver is charged on top, not instead.

Weekly and monthly hire is quoted by negotiation rather than off a published tariff, because the rate depends on the vehicle, the length of the commitment and where the car is going. If you are here for more than a few days it is worth asking — monthly rentals and long-term leasing both come in below the daily rate multiplied out, and that is the whole point of them.

A company driver is charged per day on top of the vehicle. There is a separate night allowance for the nights a driver has to stay away from home, which is the honest way to price a trip that ends somewhere other than Blantyre.

Visa cards are taken at the desk on a Standard Bank terminal, and bank transfer (TT) before arrival is accepted. In this market, being able to pay by card at an airport counter is worth saying out loud — you do not need to arrive carrying the cost of a week in cash.

Other methods, including mobile money, have not been confirmed. Rather than list them and be wrong, the site says what is certain; ask at the desk if you need something else.

This is the term most likely to be different from what you are used to, and it is the reason it is published rather than left to the counter.

Under standard cover, the hirer is responsible for the full cost of damage to the hired vehicle. Not an excess, not a capped contribution — the whole amount. Additional cover can be bought at the time of booking, and under it the insurer meets the larger share and the hirer meets the rest. The exact split is in the terms below.

The practical consequence is that the decision about extra cover should be made when you book, calmly, and not at a counter with a queue behind you. If you are taking a vehicle onto unsealed roads, or driving after dark, or leaving it parked somewhere unfamiliar overnight, it is the cheaper of the two decisions by a wide margin.

Fuel is full tank out, full tank back: return the vehicle at the level you collected it. Mileage is unlimited within town. Journeys outside town are agreed in advance based on the distance and the length of the hire, so tell us where you are actually going when you book rather than after you have gone.

A late return is charged as a full additional day. There is no part-day rate, so a car brought back in the evening instead of the morning costs the same as one kept another night.

Malawi drives on the left. If you are coming from a right-hand-drive country that will be unremarkable; if you are not, give yourself the first hour on quiet roads rather than the road out of the airport.

The roads themselves are shared. Minibuses stop without much warning, cyclists carry loads that change how they steer, and livestock is a genuine hazard rather than a colourful detail. Junctions are not always signposted and lane markings are not always present.

Driving after dark is the part most visitors underestimate. Unlit roads, unlit pedestrians and unlit cyclists combine badly, and the margin for error drops sharply. If your day is going to end after sunset, that is the strongest single argument for chauffeur drive rather than self drive.

The wet season runs roughly November to April, and it changes what a road is. A graded track that was fine in September may not be in February, and the vehicle that can still use it is not the one with the lowest day rate. See hiring a 4x4 for Malawi’s roads if that is your trip.

Travel into Zambia, Mozambique or Tanzania is possible by prior arrangement, and only with a company driver. Cross-border travel is not available on self-drive hire at all, so if your itinerary crosses a border the choice between self drive and a driver has already been made for you.

Arrange it when you book, not on the day. Paperwork for a vehicle leaving the country is not something a counter can produce while you wait.

Every vehicle is parked at Chileka International Airport and collected from the R&H desk in the arrivals hall — there is no separate yard to find and no trip into town before you have a car.
