Self drive vs chauffeur drive in Malawi: which to choose

Take the car yourself if you are staying mainly on tarmac, driving mostly in daylight, comfortable driving on the left, and here long enough that the daily saving adds up.

Take a driver if your days are full and multi-stop, if you will be travelling after dark, if you are not confident on unfamiliar roads, or if your itinerary crosses a border — because that last one is not a preference, it is a rule.

Everything below is the reasoning behind those two paragraphs.

With self-drive car hire you take the keys at the desk and the vehicle is yours for the booked period. No schedule to keep, nobody to collect you, and the lowest cost of the two.

The requirements are the ones that come with being the driver: you must be 21 or over, hold a licence you have had for at least a year — Malawian, foreign or an International Driving Permit — and pass vetting. There is no security deposit; the full hire amount is payable before collection instead.

The day rates below are the self-drive rates for every vehicle in the fleet.

A company driver is charged on top of the vehicle rate, not instead of it. This is the single most misread thing about chauffeur hire anywhere, so it is worth being blunt: the driver figure below is an addition to the day rate above, not a replacement for it.

There is also a night allowance, which applies on nights the driver has to stay away from home. If your trip runs to the lakeshore and back over three days, that is part of the real cost and it is better in the quotation than in a conversation afterwards.

Longer stays, where the daily difference compounds. A month of driver days is a substantial line item; a month of self drive is not.

Trips with no fixed shape — the kind where you decide at breakfast where the day goes. A driver works best against an itinerary, and if you do not have one you are paying for a resource you are not using.

Residents needing a temporary replacement vehicle, who are already driving here every day and do not need anybody to tell them what the roads are like.

And straightforward town driving. If your week is a hotel, an office and a restaurant, the Honda Fit or the Toyota Porte and your own two hands are all this needs to be.

After dark. This is the strongest case and it is not really about skill. Roads are unlit, and so are many of the pedestrians and cyclists on them. A driver who knows the route is doing something genuinely difficult that you would be doing for the first time.

Full working days with several stops. The time lost to finding parking in Blantyre, working out which road is passable, and locating a lodge whose turnoff is unmarked is time taken out of the day you flew here to have. Chauffeur drive buys that back.

Any day where you would rather arrive able to work. A driver means the journey between two meetings is available to you instead of spent.

And the wet season, on roads you do not know. A graded road can change character overnight in the rains, and judging whether the one ahead is still passable is experience rather than confidence.

Cross-border travel. Journeys into Zambia, Mozambique or Tanzania are possible by prior arrangement and only with a company driver. Self-drive hire cannot leave the country at all. If your itinerary crosses a border, the decision is made.

Damage liability. Under standard cover the hirer carries the full cost of damage to the vehicle, with optional additional cover available at booking that shifts the larger share to the insurer. That risk sits with you on self drive. It is not a reason on its own to take a driver, but it belongs in the arithmetic — particularly on rough roads, and particularly at night.

Every vehicle in the fleet is available either way, and a driver can be added to any hire. Plenty of visitors take a driver for the first day, get their bearings, and drive themselves for the rest of the trip. Others do the reverse — self drive all week, a driver for the one evening with a dinner across town.
